Among the borrowed ideas by which he spread his barbarism was that of the public arena, in which, by exhibitions of manly and horrible courage, the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured.

But even here the tremendous and barbaric fancy showed itself. The arena of the king was built not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the last words of dying soldiers, nor to allow them to view the inevitable end of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far more useful in widening and developing the mental energies of the people. This vast arena was an agent of poetic justice, in which crime was punished, or virtue rewarded, by the commands of an impartial and incorruptible chance.

彼に採用されたアイデアの数々によって、彼はその野蛮性を撒き散らしたのだが、その中には公共の闘技場があって、そこで人々は男らしさや恐るべき勇気を観衆に見せ、そしてそれによって王の臣民たちの心は洗練され陶冶されるのであった。

だが、ここにおいてすら、王の巨大で野蛮な夢想が姿を見せていた。王の闘技場は、死に行く兵士の最後の言葉を人々に聞かせる機会を与えるためや、宗教的意見と飢えた顎の争闘の不可避の結末を観衆に見せるためではなく、もっと有益な目的、すなわち人々の精神的な活力を拡大し向上させるために建てられたのであった。この広大な闘技場は詩的な公正さの代行者であり、ここには、偏りもなく買収されることもない機会があり、その裁定によって罪は罰せられ、美徳は報酬を与えられたのである。
