When a subject was accused of a crime of sufficient importance to interest the king, public notice was given that on an appointed day the fate of the accused person would be decided in the king’s arena – a building which well deserved its name ; for, although its form and plan were borrowed from afar, its purpose came from this man only, who, every inch a king, knew no tradition to which he owed more faith than pleased his fancy, and who added to every form of human thought and action the rich growth of his barbaric ideas.

・彼（王）は「every human thought and action」に「the growth of his barbaric ideas」を付け加えた、という趣旨だろうが、「every human thought and action」というのが、今一つよく分からない。直訳すれば「すべての、人間の思考と行動」ということになるのだろうが、文意がつかみにくい言い回しだ。であるから、ここは「この闘技場におけるあらゆる事柄」と訳しておく。

王の臣民の一人が、王を面白がらせるのに十分な重要性を持った罪で告発されると、ある予定された日に、告発された臣民の運命が王の闘技場で決定されるという公告が掲示された。この建築物は「王の闘技場」という呼び名に恥じないものであった。なぜなら、その形態やプランこそはるか遠い所から借りてきたものではあったが、その目的は、あらゆる点で王であるこの男一人に出たものであり、自分自身の愉快な夢想以外にはいかなる伝統にもその起源を負うてはいなかったからである。そして彼はこの闘技場で行われるあらゆる事柄に、彼の野蛮な夢想による豊かで拡張されたアイデアを付けくわえたのであった。
