How her soul had burned in agony when she had seen him rush to meet that woman, with her bright cheek and sparkling eye of triumph; when she had seen him lead her forth, his whole frame fresh with the joy of recovered life; when she had heard the glad shouts from the crowds, and the wild ringing of the happy bells; when she had seen the priest, with his joyous followers, advance to the couple, and make them man and wife before her very eyes; and when she had seen them walk away together upon their path of flowers, followed by the tremendous shouts of the happy people in which her one despairing shriek was lost and drowned!

＊描写が念入り過ぎるくらい念入りである。お茶漬けで食事を済ますような日本人にとっては、腹にもたれそうなくらいだ。しかし、これくらい書かないと、王女の悲哀が読者に伝わらないのも確かだろう。段落の途中からはすべて「How her soul was burned in agony」を受けて、セミコロンでつなぐ形で、その原因となる事柄を並列的に書いている。ある意味、８行にも渡って１文だけで書かれているようなもので、重厚な文章だ。面倒なので、文を分けて訳すことにする。

しかし、どれほど、よりしばしば彼女は、彼がもう一方の扉を開けることを夢に見ただろう！　彼女の恐ろしい夢の中で、女のいる扉を開けた時の彼の喜びの驚きを見て、彼女はどれほど自分の髪を掻き毟ったことだろう！　どれほど彼女の魂は激しい苦痛に焼かれたことだろうか。……明るい頬と勝利に輝く目の女に向かって彼は駆け寄り、彼女を前に導く。彼の体全体は回復された生の喜びに満たされる。王女の耳は観衆の楽しげな叫び声と、幸福の鐘が荒々しく鳴り渡るのを聞く。僧侶が楽しげな一団を引き連れて前に進み出て、彼女のまさにその目の前で闘技場の中の二人を夫と妻にする。花の撒き散らされた小道を通り、観衆の喜びの声に送られて幸せな二人は闘技場を出て行く。その歓喜の声の中で、彼女のたった一つの悲鳴は搔き消され、呑み込まれる。
